Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication expressed dissatisfaction on the unilateral action of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block Un-registered IMEI cell phones after 20th October 2018 and said that the action has created confusion in the minds of the people and there is no information on how the new system would work.
Chairperson of the Committee Senator Rubina Khalid said there is need to create proper awareness to enable common man to understand the new system. Committee said that, no proper campaign was made for launching of this new scheme, which makes this suspicious.
Committee directed PTA and Ministry for Information Technology to immediately stop the new initiative. The committee would formulate detailed recommendation in this regard, however, it issued directions to FBR and other relevant stakeholders to appear in the next meeting to give proper input on the issue.
The meeting was attended among others by Senators Dr. Ashok Kumar, Sana Jamali, Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh, Fida Muhammad, Sarfraz Ahmed Bhughti,Ghaus Muhammad Niazi, Rehman Malik, special invitee Leader of the House Shibli Faraz, Jamal Asghar Additional Secretary IT&T, Muhammad Naveed Chairman PTA and other Senior Officials.
