Special Committee of Asian Parliamentary Assembly on Creation of Asian Parliament in its meeting on Monday held deliberations on the draft Resolution titled, ‘Towards an Asian Parliament’ where delegates from member countries expressed their views and amendments on the resolution. The Pakistani delegation headed by Senator Farooq Hamid Naek comprised of Senator Abdul Qayyum, Senator Barrister Ali Saif, Senator Javed Abbasi, Senator Sana Jamali, Shahzeb Durrani, Sitara Ayaz, Usman Kakar and Nuzhat Sadiq.
The resolution came forward as a result of the Lahore declaration adopted on 3rd December, 2014 where the APA plenary had established SCCAP with more developments in subsequent years on the path towards an Asian Parliament. It was the Senate of Pakistan that came up with the proposal of the Asian Parliament back in 2014 and on the SCCAP meeting on Monday Pakistan came up with most amendments to the resolution. The amendments proposed by Pakistan proposed formatting a group of academia, parliamentarians, think tanks, and executive to undertake a comprehensive study on the roadmap for creation of Asian Parliament and proposal of holding a conference of speakers and presiding officers of Asian Parliaments to address requisites for the creation of the Asian Parliament. The APA Standing Committee on Political Affairs in its meeting on Tuesday will take up discussion on the resolution for further deliberations on amendments.
The meeting was chaired by Leader of the House in Senate, Senator Syed Shibli Faraz who called the Creation of Asian Parliament a long term prosperity goal for the region. Earlier, Deputy Secretary General of APA Dr. Khorram Ali gave an overview of the report of the Secretary General APA to the SCCAP meeting.
