Event Title: Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change

Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change in its meeting on Thursday was given a detailed briefing on the treaties and MOUs signed by the Government with different international agencies and international projects related to climate change being executed by Federal Government as well as by the Provincial Governments through the Federal Government. The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Senator Sitara Ayaz here at the Parliament Lodges and was attended among others by Senators Keshoo Bai, Muhammad Akbar, Pervaiz Rasheed, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Gul Bashra, Secretary Climate Change, IG Forests and senior officers of the ministry.

The international conventions include Vienna convention on protection of ozone layer, Montreal Protocol on protection of ozone layer, Basel Convention on control of trans-boundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal, Rotterdam Convention on prior informed consent procedure for hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade, Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants, Minamata Convention on mercury, Convention on international trade of endangered species, Ramsar Convention on wetlands, Convention on migrating species, Convention on biological diversity, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Kyoto Protocol, Doha Agreement to Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, SAARC, UN Environment, SACOSAN and SACEP.

A total of 10 international projects are underway through the Federal Government that include Global snow leopard and ecosystem protection programme, REDD + Readiness preparation in Pakistan, Comprehensive reduction and elimination of POPs in Pakistan, Development of minamata initial assessment in Pakistan, Review and update of national implementation plan for Stockholm convention on persistence in Pakistan, International strengthening of ozone cell for implementation of Montreal protocol, Generating global environmental benefits from improved decisions, sustainable forest management project, sustainable land management project and scaling-up of glacial lake outburst flood risk reduction in Pakistan.
