Press Release Title: Senator Khalida Ateeb, Convener Sub-Committee of The Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production presiding over a meeting of the committee at Parliament House Islamabad.

The Sub-Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Industries & Production held a  meeting on Thursday, chaired by Senator Khalida Ateeb. The session focused on addressing the persistent and multifaceted problems plaguing Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), with an emphasis on investigating the massive theft and operational challenges facing the state-owned enterprise.    The committee sought to review and deliberate all FIRs filed related to the ongoing theft cases at Pakistan Steel Mills.   The committee directed to inquire on the estimated loss due to stolen materials, including wires and other valuable components   The convenor committee observed  that the theft involving materials worth *10 billion PKR* had resulted in only one suspension so far, raising serious concerns about accountability. Senator Khalida Ateeb, Convenor of the committee, stressed, “This massive theft is not the act of a single individual; it’s a well-coordinated chain of people involved. We must identify every individual responsible and hold them accountable.”   The  CEO PSM apprised that both criminal proceedings and departmental inquiries are underway, with a strict adherence to procedural fairness for those found guilty.   The CEO PSM said that chronic  issues such as electricity and water shortages were highlighted as critical barriers hampering  PMS locality. The committee was informed that despite of the challenges , the company generates the salaries of its employees at their own.   It was briefed that Pakistan Steel Mills owns land in acres and most of the part is comprising of industrial area.   The FIR related to land encroachment failed to specify the exact area, a detail deemed essential for legal clarity and resolution.    The committee emphasized the need for precise Terms of Reference (TOR) to conduct an inquiry which help to inquire about the realities of the Pakistan Steel mills.   Senator Ateeb criticized the frequent transfers of secretaries whenever they attempted to delve deeper into the mill’s problems, hampering consistent oversight and reform efforts.   Discussion touched upon the implications of the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Act on PSM’s management and operations.   The committee resolved to summon representatives from labor unions and the registered workers’ unions to gain insight into labor-related issues. Officials from the Water and Sewerage Company will also be called to address the chronic water supply problems impacting the area.   The meeting was attended by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan and Senator Husna Bano.
