The Pakistan-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Brazil through sustained parliamentary engagement, economic collaboration, cultural exchange, and strategic cooperation.
A high-level meeting of the group, chaired by Convenor Senator Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan at Parliament House, expressed optimism that ongoing defense collaboration, expanding trade relations, and cultural initiatives will continue to elevate the Pakistan-Brazil partnership to new heights.
Advisor to the Chairman Senate, Ms. Misbah Khar, briefed the group on the growing potential for enhancing parliamentary, trade, and economic ties with Brazil. She noted that Pakistan and Brazil have enjoyed longstanding cordial relations and that regular parliamentary exchanges will further strengthen these bonds. Highlighting bilateral trade, Ms. Khar shared that the trade volume between the two countries has now surpassed USD 1.6 billion, with Pakistan’s exports to Brazil exceeding USD 110 million for the first time in 2023—a historic milestone. She emphasized the potential for Brazilian investment in Pakistan’s agriculture and livestock sectors.
The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Brazil, H.E. Mr. Olyntho Vieira, and Senator Jam Saifullah Khan.
Members of the group appreciated Brazil’s role as host of COP30, underscoring its commitment to global climate leadership. It was noted that climate change remains a high-priority issue in Pakistan’s policy agenda, with several initiatives underway to mitigate its impact.
Senator Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering dialogue, enhancing mutual understanding, and addressing global challenges such as sustainable development, peace, and inclusive growth. He called for institutionalizing parliamentary cooperation and increasing exchanges of visits to strengthen ties across multiple sectors.
The Pakistan-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group also extended a formal invitation to its counterpart in the Brazilian Parliament to visit Pakistan and explore opportunities for mutual collaboration.
Ms. Misbah Khar further noted the historical and diplomatic depth of the Pakistan-Brazil relationship and emphasized the significance of people-to-people exchanges in cultivating mutual respect and long-lasting friendship.
In his remarks, Ambassador Vieira thanked the Senate’s parliamentary friendship group for its warm sentiments and shared optimism about the future of Pakistan-Brazil relations. He endorsed the view that parliamentarians have a vital role in advancing bilateral cooperation and acknowledged the dynamic efforts of Ms. Misbah Khar in building bridges of understanding between the two nations.
