Deputy Chairman Senate, Senator Syedaal Khan, chaired a meeting of the Senate House Committee today at Parliament House to review matters concerning Parliament Lodges, including the repair and maintenance of existing facilities, construction of 104 new suites, and budgetary allocations for these works.
During the meeting, the Committee expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of Parliament Lodges, citing issues such as uncleanliness and lack of basic amenities. Senator Poonjo Bheel pointed out that members often face difficulties even for essential items like replacement of electric bulbs, reflecting administrative inefficiencies.
Senator Kamil Ali Agha raised alarm over the unprofessional conduct of CDA officers posted at Parliament Lodges, stressing that such behavior towards Members of Parliament is unacceptable.
Senator Khalil Tahir Sandhu highlighted the issue of electricity arrears left unpaid by previous allottees, urging that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) ensure recovery of these outstanding dues.
Minister of State for Interior, Senator Talal Chaudhry, assured the Committee that the Ministry is actively working on a plan to revamp the existing Parliament Lodges. He informed that, under the directions of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and in consultation with the Speaker of the National Assembly, immediate steps will be taken for the construction of 104 new suites and comprehensive resolution of issues relating to Parliament Lodges.
Officials from the Finance Division apprised the Committee that sufficient funds have been allocated for Parliament Lodges’ maintenance for the financial year 2025–2026. However, the Director CDA (Parliament Lodges) informed that maintenance activities have been hampered due to pending liabilities from the last two years.
In response, the Committee resolved to hold monthly Senate House Committee meetings to ensure continuous oversight of Parliament Lodges’ matters. It was recommended, in line with suggestions from the Senate Finance Committee, that honest and efficient CDA staff be deputed for repair and maintenance work. The Committee further recommended replacing the current staff, citing inefficiency and prolonged tenure.
Additionally, the Committee took serious notice of unauthorized occupation of lodges by former members. Given the acute shortage of accommodation, the Committee strongly recommended immediate vacation of lodges from unauthorized occupants.
The Committee recommended prompt maintenance of the Parliament Lodges and emphasized that priority should be given to the lodges allotted to female parliamentarians for repairs and upkeep.
The meeting was attended by Senators Jan Muhammad, Kamil Ali Agha, Poonjo Bheel, Khalil Tahir Sandhu, Minister of State for Interior Senator Talal Chaudhry, Special Secretary Interior Waqas Ali Mahmood, along with senior officials from the Finance and Law Divisions.
