Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti Calls for Strengthened Local Governance and Unified National Policy Framework at Punjab Parliamentarians’ Conference on SDGs

Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti, representing the Senate of Pakistan, delivered a substantive and forward-looking address at the Punjab Parliamentarians’ Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), held under the panel titled “Parliamentary Leadership for Agenda 2030: Strengthening Legislative Action and SDG Commitments Across Pakistan’s Houses.”

Senator Chishti extended his appreciation to the Government of Punjab and the Parliamentary Development Unit for convening a national-level committee and creating a platform that brings together parliamentarians from across the federation. He welcomed the province’s initiative in fostering inter-legislative collaboration on SDGs and commended the recommendations put forward—particularly those aimed at empowering local governments and ensuring their constitutional protection.

He emphasized that Pakistan’s progress toward Agenda 2030 is contingent upon a unified national policy direction, backed by coherent federal, provincial, and local implementation. “Policies must be framed at the national level with a shared vision for social justice, and these must be effectively implemented across all tiers of governance,” he stated.

Referring to his own role as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Health, Senator Chishti noted that the health sector remains central to Pakistan’s SDG commitments and requires targeted reforms, increased investments, and improved provincial-federal coordination. He also acknowledged the presence and contributions of Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Education, and affirmed that both health and education are foundational pillars for achieving equitable and sustainable development.

He reiterated support for Punjab’s recommendation to reinforce local governance structures. “Stronger local governments will accelerate SDG progress, ensure accountability, and bring service delivery closer to citizens “ he said.

The Senator concluded by reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to advancing the 2030 Agenda through proactive legislation, strengthened oversight mechanisms, and enhanced inter-provincial collaboration, ensuring that parliament remains at the center of Pakistan’s sustainable development trajectory.
