Violation of Binding Treaties Is Eroding Respect for International Law: Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani

Pakistan Parliamentary Delegation, led by Chairman Senate, Meets President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

United Nations:  Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Chairman Senate along with members of the parliamentary delegation, met Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the margins of the two-day IPU Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations.

Chairman Senate said that universal respect for international law was essential for a stable global order. He underlined that the unimplemented UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir and weaponisation of water by India undermined international law, UN Charter and sanctity of international treaties, with grave consequences for peace and stability in South Asia.

Terming the Indian illegal action of putting in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) as a dangerous precedent, he emphasized that this blatant violation of international law endangers the lives and livelihoods of millions of Pakistanis.

Pakistan believed that the IPU should continue facilitating dialogue aimed at promoting respect for international law and treaty obligations, he said.

The Chairman Senate stated that Pakistan wants stable and prosperous Afghanistan, however, the use of Afghan soil for terrorism against Pakistan was deeply troubling. There was a clear pattern of terrorist attacks in Pakistan emanating from Afghanistan where a plethora of terrorist groups including TTP, BLA, Al-Qaeda and ISIL-K were operating with total impunity with the Taliban failing to fulfill its international obligations on counter-terrorism.

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that Pakistan values the IPU’s advocacy on development and supports stronger parliamentary action in this regard. He said that his country stands ready to work closely with the IPU to strengthen multilateral cooperation.

IPU remains the oldest and most inclusive global forum of parliaments and plays a critical role in advancing parliamentary diplomacy, serving as an important and credible complement to traditional diplomacy, he noted.

He recalled that Pakistan successfully hosted the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Islamabad in 2025, which provided a valuable platform for dialogue and exchange among parliaments.

Such parliamentary engagements, he said, contribute meaningfully to discussions on peace, development, and mutual understanding among nations.
Pakistan was also doing its part to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, he highlighted.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, stated that the IPU provides a unique platform for parliamentarians from different regions to come together to discuss contemporary issues.

She lauded Pakistan’s role as a promoter of dialogue in multilateral diplomacy.
