Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani Attends Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, as Chief Guest at a local hotel of Islamabad.
While attending a commemorative event organized by High Commission of Rwanda in Islamabad on the 32nd anniversary of genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda, Chairman Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has described the tragedy as one of the darkest chapters in modern human history, where, in the span of just one hundred days, over a million innocent lives were brutally taken, leaving behind shattered families and scarred communities. He expressed these views while attending the solemn commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda as the Chief Guest, organized by the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in Pakistan.
Addressing the distinguished gathering, the Chairman Senate expressed profound grief and solidarity with the people of Rwanda on the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 genocide. He described the tragedy as one of the darkest chapters in modern human history, where, in the span of just one hundred days, over a million innocent lives were brutally taken, leaving behind shattered families and scarred communities.
The Chairman Senate paid tribute to the resilience, courage, and remarkable journey of the Rwandan nation, which has transformed immense pain and suffering into a powerful narrative of unity, reconciliation, and national rebuilding. He commended the leadership and people of Rwanda for setting a global example in healing and progress.
He further stated that the memory of such atrocities resonates deeply with the people of Pakistan, recalling the painful experiences during the country’s independence, when countless innocent lives were lost in communal violence and forced migrations. He emphasized that these shared experiences strengthen the bond of empathy and solidarity between nations that have endured such tragedies.
Senator Gilani underscored that remembrance is not only an act of mourning but also a call to conscience and action. He stressed that the lessons of Rwanda serve as a stark reminder that hatred, when left unchecked, can lead to unimaginable consequences, while unity, tolerance, and justice can pave the way for healing and peace.
Highlighting Pakistan’s principled stance, the Chairman Senate reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human dignity. He emphasized that the rights of marginalized and oppressed communities must remain central to the global agenda, adding that silence in the face of injustice amounts to complicity.
The Chairman Senate called upon the international community to collectively work towards strengthening institutions, promoting inclusive governance, and fostering a culture of tolerance and coexistence. He stressed the importance of education that nurtures empathy and mutual respect, ensuring that the pledge of “Never Again” is upheld in both word and action.
He concluded by urging all stakeholders to renew their commitment to stand against hatred in all its forms, advocate for peace, and uphold the dignity of every human being across the world.
The ceremony was attended by Federal Ministers, ambassadors of various countries, members of parliament, media representatives, and individuals from diverse walks of life. The Chairman Senate thanked the Rawanda' High Commissioner to Pakistan Ms Fatou Hareiman and expressed gratitude to her and reaffirmed his solidarity with her and the people of Rwanda
