A medicine professional by training and practice, a social worker, a specialist in mother & child Health Care and an expert in planning of population welfare programmes, Dr. Noor Jehan Penezai family of the Kakar tribe at Shenleza in the Sibi district of BAlochistan.
After her early education in Quetta, she went to Lahore where she earned an MBBS degree from Fatima Jinnah Medical Colege. She also opted for specialization in Gynecology and got an MRSH degree from the United Kingdom.
Dr. Penezai is an active social worker and is represented in a large number of social welfare organizations, NGOs, Girls Guide Association etc. Her deep study in the cultural and socio-economic life of the people of almost all, even the remotest, areas of Pakistan has given her an insight into the basic human problems and hence was taken to the provincial Council of Baluchistan in 1983. She was elected as a Member of the National Assembly, against one of the special seats for woman, in 1985. She was elected to the Senate of Pakistan – the only lady Senator in the House – in 1988 for a six year term. She was also Federal Minister for Health, Social Welfare and Women Division in the caretaker government in 1990.
She has visited the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, China, India, Bulgaria, Kenya, Cuba and a number of other countries of Asia and Europe on academic, diplomatic, official and private errands.
