A versatile and enlightened journalist by profession, Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed was born in Sialkot on 2nd November, 1952. He has a Master's degree from the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University in Washington DC. Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed taught politics and International Relations at the Punjab University Lahore before leaving Academia for the media in 1979. He was a Member of the Faculty of the Pakistan Administrative Staff College, the country's premier training institution, directing a training programme for new diplomats. Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed has been writing regularly on national and international affairs. His areas of specialization include the media, politics of the Muslim world, Pakistan's Foreign Policy and regional security issues. During 1982-87 he was Editor of "The Muslim" a major national English daily published from the Federal Capital. He is also author of three books on Pakistan's foreign policy and domestic politics. Mr. Mushahid Hussain served as Co-Chairman of the conference on the Non-Aligned Medial (NAMEDIA) held in New Delhi in December 1983. He was leader of Pakistan's delegation to the 49th Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights which met in Geneva during February-March, 1993. He also served as Chairman of the Prime Minister's Task Force on Central Asia established to coordinate Pakistan's policy towards Central Asia. He served as Special Assistant to Prime Minister Nawaz Sahrif, and in this Cabinet-level position, he was handling External Publicity and Foreign Affairs with special reference to the United States, Central Asia, India and Kashmir. His articles have been published in various international publications, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, Asia Week, Far Eastern Economic Review, Jane's Defence Weekly, International Herald Tribune etc. etc. while he has also been providing current affairs analyses for the BBC, VOA and National Defence Staff College, the Civil Services Academy, the Foreign Service Academy and the Pakistan Naval Staff College. Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed is Information Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League. He was elected as a Member of the Senate of Pakistan in March 1997 for a period of six years. He holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Information and Media Development as a Federal Minister and prior to his induction in the Federal Cabinet, he was Advisor to the Prime Minister on Information Tourism, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs.
