Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi called on Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani in his chamber here at the Parliament House on Friday. Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani observed that all elected leadership and state institutions are on the same page when it comes to projecting the true and soft image of the country before the international community. Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the initiative of Senate of Pakistan of holding the Asian Parliamentary Assembly meetings in Gwadar is appreciated by all stakeholders and termed the arrival of delegations from Asian, African and European countries in big numbers a success for country and a sign of trust of Parliaments around the world in Pakistan.
Chairman Senate apprised the Foreign Minister about the arrangements and arrival of delegates and said that the organisation of the meetings of Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Gwadar will not only mark a success for Pakistan on international stage but will also introduce the new port city of Gwadar as the new economic hub of the Asian region.
The meeting was held in connection with finalising arrangements for the meetings of APA to be held in Gwadar on 29-31 October. The Senate of Pakistan is hosting Meetings of APA Standing Committee on Political Affairs & Special Committee for Creation of Asian Parliament in Gwadar, 29 – 31 October, 2018, the future hub of Asian trade. Around 100 Member Parliaments from 26 from Asian, African and European countries will be sitting together in Gwadar to deliberate on matters facing the Asian Region and to look into ways and means to make the Asian Region more inclusive and development oriented.
Foreign Minister assured the Chairman Senate of all support of the Foreign Office in the conduct of this international conference and government of Pakistan welcomes the foreign delegates and Parliamentary representatives. He said that Senate of Pakistan has lived up to its name of being the House of Federation by calling this important gathering in the province of Balochistan.
Senate of Pakistan has played a vibrant and active role in making Asian Parliamentary Assembly an active and useful tool for bringing Parliaments of Asian countries together under one roof and discuss options to make the region more inclusive in terms of growth, development and prosperity. Holding the meetings in Gwadar is only natural for the Asian region whose future trade and business potential is going to be defined by this strategically located city of Pakistan.
Senate of Pakistan through its members and through the Secretariat has always taken lead in the affairs and engagements of Asian Parliamentary Assembly. Whether it is the voluntary initiative of hosting the APA plenary sessions and Committee meetings or coming up with strong and meaningful resolutions, or actively taking further the idea of an Asian Parliament, Senate of Pakistan has been living true to the notion of ‘leading by example’ and has been playing a pivotal role with full institutional force in making this Assembly of Asian Parliaments a stepping stone for future growth and inclusive prosperity of the Asian Region, its countries and hence its peoples.
The trust of region on Pakistan and the acknowledgement of its proactive role in taking necessary steps for development has been revealed through confirmation of attendance by 26 Asian countries including Secretary General Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to this meeting. Pakistan occupies a geopolitically important location at the crossroads of South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia. Its geo-strategic location makes it a land of connectivity. Pakistan is taking this connectivity to Asia and beyond and presence of African and European countries at the APA forum in Gwadar is testimonial to this fact.
